Facebook to make Bono richest musician

U2 frontman Bono?will become the richest musician in the world May 18, overtaking Paul McCartney, according to NME.

Facebook is set to float on the stock exchange and all its early investors are set to earn huge amounts of money from the flotation, with the Irish singer among them.

STORY: Facebook prices IPO at $38 a share; value of company is $104 billion

The U2 singer owns 2.3 percent of the shares in Facebook through his private equity firm, Elevation Partners, which it bought for $90 million (?57 million) in 2009 and now stands to make a handsome return. Given the social media company is currently valued at over $100 billion (?63 billion), this makes Bono’s share worth over $1.5 billion (?940 million) and puts him well above McCartney, who is currently the world’s richest rock star with a fortune of ?665 million, said NME.

Taste of Home Kicks Off Search to Find Mrs. Holiday | Mommy Blog …

image002.jpegI don’t know about you, but I am completed addicted to singing shows, dance contests, modeling competitions and food challenges but with the TV season ending soon, I have to say I’m going to be suffering from some serious overnight star withdrawal. Good thing I just found out about a new competition hosted by Taste of Home that even I can enter. I mean I do make a scrumptious Thanksgiving turkey and a mean matzoh ball soup!

The craftiest, most creative and culinary-savvy woman in America will get her due when Taste of Home crowns its first-ever Mrs. Holiday as the brand’s holiday spokesperson. The entertaining brand will be going where no publishing company has gone before in this search for the best holiday cook in America— and the winner, appearing as the magazine’s spokesperson, will win $50,000.

Taste of Home’s search for Mrs. Holiday isn’t just another talent competition–it’s a new kind of pageant that showcases the women who make the holidays spectacular for all of us.

Recognizing the enormity of the holidays to peoples’ personal lives and the U.S. economy, Taste of Home has begun a nationwide search on Facebook.com/TasteofHome to identify candidates for the position of Mrs. Holiday, a spokesperson role at the company, which includes a $50,000 payment. “Mrs. Holiday will be a new type of pageant queen,” said Taste of Home editor-in-chief Catherine Cassidy. “She’s an advocate, an ambassador and an inspiration who cooks for her family to bring everyone around the table at the holidays. She’s got memorable recipes combined with a celebration attitude.”

To audition for the role of Mrs. Holiday, women age 18 or older must visit Facebook.com/TasteofHome to enter a virtual pageant. There they can submit a video entry of no more than two minutes to show/tell us how they bring the holidays to life and convince us why they should be Taste of Home’s Mrs. Holiday. They also should submit a signature holiday recipe in 200 words or less. The full entry rules and instructions are provided at Facebook.com/TasteofHome. All entries will receive a free chocolate chip cookie recipe as a thank you for auditioning.

Some business owners opt to start an affiliate marketing campaign as part of their overall marketing strategy. In most cases the affiliate marketing campaign is only a small portion of the overall marketing strategy but there are some business owners who opt to rely exclusively on this type of marketing. The main purpose of doing this is to save money while still achieving valuable advertising. However, once a business becomes more successful they should consider being more proactive and combining affiliate marketing with other types of Internet marketing such as placing banner ads and orchestrating an email marketing campaign. This article will take a look at what affiliate marketing is and will provide insight into why this is popular and how it can be used effectively.

An affiliate marketing campaign is essentially a situation where other website owners place ads for your business on their websites. For more detail go to:www.affiliate-sale-booster.com. These website owners are known as affiliates. It is important to understand how this type of marketing works. In general the affiliates are given code for your banner ad to place on their website and given the freedom to promote their own website as they see fit. In promoting their website they are also attracting attention to your website because of the banner ad directing visitors to your own website.

One of the most appealing elements of affiliate marketing is the affiliate is only compensated when he produces a desired result. For more detail go to:www.affiliate-directories-online.com. This means the business owner is not obligated to pay the affiliate unless the affiliate is successful. Success may be defined as generating traffic to the website, resulting in a sale or even resulting in the Internet user registering on your website or filling out a survey. The compensation for affiliates is generally based on cost per click, cost per lead or cost per sale. Cost per click and cost per lead are usually paid in terms of a flat fee which is awarded to the affiliate each time an Internet user either simply clicks through the banner ad on his website or performs a specific action after clicking through the ad. Cost per sale may result in the affiliate being awarded a flat fee or a percentage of the sale depending on the agreement between the business owner and the affiliate.

The most effective use of affiliate marketing is to actively seek out affiliates with a proven track record of promoting the businesses which they support. Most affiliate programs are open to anyone with a website and it is not necessarily damaging to allow those who are not particularly knowledgeable about marketing to run your banner ad but it is far more worthwhile to seek out affiliates who are quite adept and generating website traffic to their own website. This is important because the more visitors they receive each month the more likely your website it to receive interest from visitors who click on the affiliates banner ad.

Another aspect of affiliate marketing which can contribute to success or failure is the design of your banner ads. It is important to remember affiliate marketing is viewed the same way other types of marketing are viewed and care should be taken to create banner ads which will be appealing to your target audience. This means everything from the colors of your ad to the size and style of the font should be carefully considered to create an appealing advertisement.

Microsoft’s Bing gets a new look, offers new functions

In the real world, when folks decide where to eat, what to buy, which movie to go see and so on, they frequently seek the recommendations of friends and so-called experts.

Three years after launching its “Decision Engine,” Microsoft is overhauling Bing to make its online search engine more social. Though it’s taking a different path, Bing’s strategy resembles that taken by rival Google, still the dominant player in search.

As part of the new Bing, people you know, and in some cases, strangers, are more prominently featured in the decision-making mix that includes Facebook and other networks.

I generally applaud Microsoft’s approach. But not everything in this still-early-stage preview is working smoothly . For one thing, I ran into trouble getting all the new Bing features to show up on the Mac’s Safari Web browser (which Microsoft says is related to the version I’ve been testing and will be fixed). For another, I want to see more users actually have access to the revamped Bing to more fully unleash its potential.

You can check out the changes for yourself at Bing.com/new, but consumers must still wait a few weeks for all the latest features to be made available.

When you type in your actual search query, you’re exposed to Bing’s clean new three-column design interface that takes in information from traditional Web pages, enthusiasts, bloggers and yes, your friends.

The left panel is where you’ll find the kind of results you’ve come to expect from a major search engine such as Bing or Google. When I typed in “sushi new york city,” I got a typical list of results.

Things start to look different in the center column, the space reserved for the “snapshot,” where Bing pulls in relevant contextual resources from across the Web. In the sushi example, a map appeared in the snapshot with locations for some of the restaurants listed in the left column (a number appears next to the restaurants whose locations are pinpointed on the map.)

When I specifically searched the name of one popular restaurant, Nobu, the center snapshot column displayed star ratings and links to reviews from Citysearch, Urbanspoon and TripAdvisor. There was a map here, too, with directions or a street view. The center column also listed Nobu’s hours of operation, and included a photo you could click to “step inside” for a tour. A handy link lets you make a reservation through OpenTable.

In a search on The Avengers, the snapshot included the movie trailer, film length, parental rating, plot synopsis, director and cast, as well as links to reviews from Moviefone, Rotten Tomatoes and Fandango.

Snapshot doesn’t fire up for every search, which makes sense. I didn’t love that ad-sponsored results otherwise filled the space.

The third column on the right reveals the social “sidebar,” probably the most significant addition to Bing due to its heavy reliance on people. Depending on the query, you’ll see some combination of the following: “Friends who might know,” your pals on Facebook who might lend some expertise because of where they live; photos they may have posted; or what they “liked” on Facebook. You may see a “People who know” section, featuring presumed experts and influencers.

Because not a lot of people have access to the new Bing, Facebook friends who showed up in the sidebar weren’t necessarily the best ones to help me find sushi. Hovering over one friend revealed his “like” of an Italian eatery, but nothing remotely Asian. Moreover, my sushi search didn’t uncover experts, unlike a “seafood Boston” query, which listed local bloggers and foodies.

Meanwhile, a search on “Bill Gates” listed Gates himself in the “People who know” section. Hovering over his name led me to his latest tweets.

Bing should theoretically improve as it gains users and Microsoft adds new partners. The company says you might see results from friends in Quora, Foursquare, LinkedIn, even Google+.

Earlier this year, Google unveiled its own social search efforts through something called “Search, plus Your World,” which incorporates posts and pictures from friends on Google+ and places them in the midst of search results. Its reception was mixed. Microsoft through the sidebar prefers keeping social connections separate.

From within the Bing sidebar, you can post questions to Facebook friends or respond to questions from others, and see responses in an “Activity feed” or on Facebook itself, as when I asked for recommendations of trendy restaurants I could get into on short notice.

In any query, of course, the more relevant the search information, the better. So much the better if that relevant info comes from a friend or social connection.

The bottom line

www.bing.com/new

?Pro. New design incorporates “social search” through Facebook and others.

?Con. Still in preview mode. I had trouble getting it to work on Mac; not all features are ready yet.

Google Drive

Recently, some lucky Google users received an invitation to Google Drive (free to $4.99 per month). If you haven’t yet been invited to Drive, relax because you actually have most of the product and service already. It’s called Google Docs, and it’s fantastic.

Confused? The newly launched Google Drive is merely a rebranding of Google Docs with a few added features, chief among them local file syncing. In other words, Google Docs?ahem, Drive?now works more like Dropbox , SugarSync, CX, or any other file-syncing service you care to name, while still retaining the core Docs functionality, too. You can upload files to your Google account, convert them to Google’s file format to edit them online or create new docs in the Web interface, collaborate with others in real time, and export the finished products to more standard file formats, like .doc, .rtf, .pdf, .csv, and so on.

Because of these wide-ranging capabilities, Google Drive is an Editors’ Choice, although there isn’t any one product or service that directly competes with it at the moment. No other file-syncing service includes a free online office suite, and no office suite includes seamlessly integrated cloud-based file-syncing. While Google has positioned its new Google Drive cloud-storage service as one that straddles the consumer and business space, those using it for collaboration will probably get the most out of it. We have no hesitation recommending Google Drive, as it is an excellent platform and service, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only file-syncing service you should use either.

Main Features of Drive
The gist of Google Drive, and the main attraction to it, is it can store your files in the cloud where they are accessible to you and your collaborators, and become highly searchable.

One feature related to “search” stands out: Google’s ability to scan a photo and “read” it using optical character recognition, or identify it using its own technology. The only other app of this kind that uses built-in OCR nearly as well is Evernote , although you have to have a paid Premium account to use it.

Google also claims Drive allows videos to be uploaded, but we encountered some issues with that part of the service.

Like many other general file-syncing services, Google Drive works better for document files than multimedia. It’s not ideally meant to be a music and video streaming service?for that kind of product, you’ll likely need a paid service and device, such as the Verbatim Mediashare Mini, although SugarSync does offer some neat capabilities and support for streaming iTunes music. Amazon Cloud also offers some special support for music and movies. However, within the Google universe you can use Google Play in tandem with Drive (more on that in a bit).

The toughest criticism Google Drive has faced so far amount of concerns over privacy and IP ownership. My feeling on the topic is this: If you are comfortable using Gmail, you should be comfortable with Google Doc. If you are skeptical of Google’s user agreements, don’t use Google products. For more in-depth analysis, see “Google Drive’s Terms of Use: Lazy People Should Worry.”

Carryover Features from Google Docs
The core services and functionality that were in Google Docs, namely, a free online office suite where files are also hosted, are still intact in Drive. Google Docs is one of the best known free alternative to Microsoft Office, although it’s entirely Web-based?there’s no software to install to use it (the only downloadable part is the app for local syncing with Drive).

As with Microsoft Office, Google Docs/Drive (the old name still shows up if you haven’t signed up for Drive yet) lets you create word processing documents, spreadsheets, presentation documents, forms, vector drawings, and now in beta, tables. Google hosts your files, too, so when you log in, all your files are there. You can sort them into customizable folders, which appear along a left pane, or just search for what you need, using a standard search bar in the Web app.

When you create a document in Google Docs (or Drive as it were), the file format used is Google’s own. However, the system couldn’t be more flexible. You can export Google documents to more standardized files formats, like .doc, .rtf, .ppt, .pdf, and more; and you can import practically any document with the option of keeping it in its native format (which may limit your ability to edit it) or translating it into a Google doc file, which makes it editable in the online service. I’ve certainly had my share of moments when I was stuck on a computer that didn’t have Microsoft Office at the very moment someone emailed me an important file that required my feedback pronto. Google Docs saved the day. I could open the file in Google Docs/Drive, edit it, and export the revised file back out to its original form. Occasionally some formatting will go haywire during this process (bullet points, the bane of my formatting existence!) but it gets the job done.
